Accessibility
Qstudy should work for every student, including students who are blind or have low vision. This page says what works today, what does not yet, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.
Our standard
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. The Qstudy website partially conforms to that standard: we know of the gaps listed below, and it has not yet been independently audited.
What works today
Screen readers and keyboard
Every page has landmarks, a skip link and one main heading. Everything can be reached and used with a keyboard, with a visible focus outline. Generation progress, quiz feedback and errors are announced.
Maths
Equations in notes, quizzes and flashcards are real MathML, so screen readers speak them and braille displays can show them in Nemeth or UEB.
Braille downloads
Notes, quizzes, flashcards, study plans and knowledge walls download as braille-ready files (.brf) for a refreshable display or an embosser: contracted Unified English Braille, with maths in Nemeth Code or UEB technical, your choice.
Images and explainer videos
Generated images come with a written description. Explainer videos have captions, a chapter list that says what is on screen, and an optional caption track that describes the visuals. Songs come with their lyrics.
Quizzes and flashcards
Quiz options are a standard radio group with spoken feedback and explanations. Flashcards have a real flip button and announce which side is showing.
Vibration cues
On Android phones in Chrome, right and wrong answers, card flips and exam-timer warnings can vibrate. Every cue is also shown and spoken, and you can turn vibration off in your profile.
Known limitations
- Braille downloads are English only for now. Material in other languages is refused rather than brailled with English rules.
- Spatial (vertical) maths layouts are not produced in braille; maths is written in linear form.
- Vibration cues do not work on iPhone or iPad, because Safari does not support vibration on the web.
- Payment happens on Stripe's checkout page, which we do not control.
- The Qstudy mobile app has not had this work yet; it is in progress.
- No independent accessibility audit or testing by blind users has been completed yet. We plan both, and a VPAT/ACR after them.
How we test
Changes are checked automatically with axe-core against the WCAG 2.2 A and AA rules, on the main pages in light and dark mode, together with keyboard checks of focus, quizzes, flashcards, maths and braille downloads. We are adding a hands-on pass with NVDA, VoiceOver and TalkBack to every release.
Tell us what gets in your way
If something on Qstudy is hard or impossible to use with your screen reader, braille display, keyboard or any other setup, please tell us. Say which page, what you were trying to do, and what you use (for example NVDA with Firefox). A person reads every message, and we will also help you get the material you need in another format.
