Turn a Textbook Chapter Into a Practice Test
Textbook chapters are dense, and re-reading them is the least effective way to learn them. Converting a chapter into a practice test forces you to retrieve, which is what builds durable memory. Here is the method.
Step 1: Skim for structure first
Read the headings, chapter summary, and bold terms before anything else. This gives you the chapter’s skeleton: what the author thinks matters. Most exam questions come from exactly these points.
Step 2: Write questions per section
For each section, turn its key claims into questions. Mix two types:
- Recall questions: “What are the three stages of ...?” These check whether the facts are in memory.
- Application questions: “Given X, what would happen if ...?” These check whether you understand, and they are where exams separate grades.
Aim for 5 to 8 questions per section. Fewer and you are skimming; more and you will never finish.
Step 3: Take it closed-book, timed
Set a timer, close the book, and answer in writing. Then grade yourself harshly and re-study only the misses. One focused pass like this beats three re-reads.
